Why it matters
Google is moving from a Gemini that answers questions to one that carries out assignments with permissions inside the company. If it works as the company says, it changes who does part of the routine work. Because the agent has its own account and leaves a separate record, it is easier to tell what a machine did and what a person did. For now, all of this is Google's own claims.
If you use Gemini on your own, nothing changes for now: Google says the agent will reach businesses first. If your company uses Gemini Enterprise, you may be offered it soon.
The details
Google Cloud unveiled the "Gemini agent" on October 8 at its Gemini at Work event, and describes it as a universal agent for work1. It will live inside the Gemini Enterprise app and can be used from a phone, a computer, the web, Slack or Microsoft 365, according to The Verge2. Thomas Kurian, head of Google Cloud, said you can give it "goals, not just instructions"3.
According to TechCrunch, the agent picks the most suitable model by default, but users can choose another one, starting with Anthropic's Claude models. It has its own Workspace account, with its own email, and keeps a record of what it does under its own name, not a person's. Among those who tested it beforehand are On, Shopify and PayPal3. Google talks about real-time spending limits to keep costs under control3.
What we don't know
- When it will be available to all businesses, how much it will cost and whether it will reach Europe.
- When it will reach individual users.
- Whether it works as well as Google says: there is no independent evidence yet.
